Week One Reflection: The Heroes Journey

 Lessons Learned

In many stories, there's a main character set on a journey to overcome or defeat a foe.  Often, the main character comes from humble circumstances, and they might not know how they were brought up.  The main character doesn't often have a sense of purpose or direction right away, and it might require a guide or instructions to get on the path. These instructions aren't always clear in nature and don't always provide all the information right away.  However, once further researched, the hero decides how to embark on the path, they are then given multiple opportunities to progress, learn and grow from their experience as they undertake their journey.

The journey may seem long and arduous, and at times not make a lot of sense, but the hero will meet up with others who are on their own adventure and have their own areas of expertise to share.  They may be willing to share what they have discovered on their own path that may support our humble adventurer.  They may share that they need to have certain tools or show shortcuts that they might not have noticed on the original map.  Sometimes, these individuals may provide information that would require the task to be more difficult; however, it would provide for a deeper learning experience and an increase in their skill set. On these occasions, they may require a determination and effort that may not have been utilized before.  In these instances the main character might not have the belief in themselves that they can do it, there may be instances where they fail in their attempts, however all is not lost, if these failures occur it might just provide the time for the main character to pause and reevaluate and look at the situation in a different way or ask someone who comes across their path questions or advice to help them along their way.  Sometimes they may be able to figure it out on their own, and sometimes it just requires the endurance to keep going the same way until they are able to move through the obstacle.  In those instances, the main character will have gained additional skills and knowledge from these particular experiences.

Overall, the main character gains the ability, the strength and the determination to strive to never give up.   They might not end up at their goal exactly the way they anticipated; however, they might be stronger and learn so much more than if they arrived at the end of the journey by going the exact way. The defeat of the foe might not have ended the way that was directed, but is the hero able to look back from where they came from and see the hills and the valleys that they once thought were insurmountable, are now not as difficult as they seemed?  They might also see that the reward for beating the foe and reaching the pinnacle is far more worthwhile than they ever could have imagined.
