Building on What You Know. Continuing Returns

Building on What You Know

Spending time in any industry or any workplace is invaluable work.  You may gain an education through ordinary means by going to college or university to obtain skills and knowledge.  Once you get out into the world of work, it is an entirely different story.  You may stay in one workplace for a short time, or you may stay in that workplace for your entire career.

From reading the case study this week.  Randy discovered the way to receive a fully rounded education.  He took opportunities and chances when they came to him, but in each opportunity he took the chance to rub shoulders with his colleagues and build hard skills and soft skills that would benefit him as he made decisions.  He would make decisions that would support the business he was in, and then, as he built his confidence in what he knew and how he could apply these skills in other ways, he didn't limit himself to the one job; he sought out new opportunities.  In some cases, the opportunities found him.

It is always so beneficial to understand that you may not be the smartest person in the room, but you can still contribute based on your experiences.  When you seek to build on what your fellow colleagues have done and are willing to support them, you will begin to see how to lift and encourage and even be willing to learn from one another.

By building on the things you already know, you give yourself a chance to understand where you might have lacked experience and see what you can do to improve.  No one is perfect, but you can start to see where you can build muscle memory so that you can be efficient with what you contribute, and when you reach that point where it becomes part of your nature, it is easier to support and teach others.

The true value of what you know is when you can share those skills and talents without any sense that you want or need anything in return.  You just genuinely enjoy it. There is true value in that.
